Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction

8-week virtual course

Mindfulness-based stress reduction is an eight-week evidence-based program that offers secular, intensive mindfulness training to assist people with stress, anxiety, depression and pain. It is also offers as a 3 hour workshop in an abbreviate form. Both of these formats will be offered in a live stream format beginning in April 2020.

MBSR is a practical approach which trains attention, allowing people to cultivate awareness and therefore enabling them to have more choice to take wise action in their lives. MBSR uses a combination of mindfulness meditation, body awareness, yoga and exploration of patterns of behaviour, thinking, feeling and action. Mindfulness can be understood as the non-judgemental acceptance and "open-hearted" investigation of present experience, including body sensations, internal mental states, thoughts, emotions, impulses and memories, in order to reduce suffering or distress and to increase well-being. Mindfulness meditation is the method by which mindfulness skills are cultivated.

In order to see these unconscious and unhealthy processes that cause our distress, we need Mindfulness, an intentional, discerning, laser-like awareness that can see through and interrupt the powerful conditioned habits that often sabotage our lives. The MBSR curriculum is designed to train and develop mindfulness, a natural though the uncultivated quality of our mind, then uses it to change the causes and conditions that lead to stress. We diagnose and treat our dis-ease with mindfulness which allows us to learn more effective strategies for minimizing and managing our stress.

MBSR was developed for the medical community by Jon Kabat Zinn in 1979 at the University of Massachusetts School of Medicine and is now utilized in other sectors including mental health, education, business, politics and sports to name a few. Today MBSR is available in over 750 facilities worldwide including Fredericksburg, VA.In this highly interactive and participatory program, we will have presentations and discussions related to stress and stress reduction.
